History

The Puzzle of 15 is a sliding tile puzzle game based on Sam Loyd's logical brain teaser puzzle which is bound to stump the mind. Puzzle of 15, otherwise known as the 15 puzzle or puzzle 15, has been one of the most popular and enduring games of all time. The game consists of a set of numbered or pictured tiles that need to be rearranged back into its original order by sliding one tile at a time. Puzzle of 15 is one of many logic puzzles designed by Sam Loyd that require superior problem solving skills. Loyd's original puzzle game consisted of 15 squares numbered from 1 to 15 that are placed in a 4x4 grid with one vacant square. The goal is to reposition the squares from a random arbitrary starting arrangement by sliding them one at a time into an ascending numerical configuration leaving the space in the bottom right-hand corner of the grid.

At one point it became such a popular worldwide phenomenon that the New York Times wrote multiple articles about its conception. Puzzle of 15 popularity can be compared to the fascination with the Rubik's cube in the 1980s. Interestingly enough, the Rubik's cube, invented by Erno Rubik, was actually based on the Puzzle of 15. There would be no Rubik's Cube without Sam Loyd! You can read more information about the Puzzle of 15's influence on the Rubik's cube.
